400km along the coast of Poland

The boys were already bigger – we couldn’t fit them all on Rusty – but still not old enough to ride bikes on their own, or pedal uphill for longer. And so, when we were thinking about where to go on vacation in the summer of 2022, we decided on a bike path along the coast in the north of Poland. There is eurovelo 10 and eurovelo 13 – orute which meets…

  • it will be away from cars and the guys can cycle alone,
  • it will be flat and they won’t be too busy,
  • there will be plenty of campsites and we don’t have to plan much,
  • we will be by the sea and we can bathe
  • it won’t be too expensive or too far to get there.

So we packed up Rusty, Kolko’s bike, Stanko’s balance bike, our trailer and a newly bought folding bike (which was originally supposed to be for Janko) and we went on our cycling holiday for two weeks – ride along the coast of Poland from the west (we left the car in Pobierowo) as far as we could go (they came to Hel).

The weather was fine, the west of Poland was like an amusement park with a lot of tourists, but the paths were nice, the sea was great (sand, clean and colder water, but fine for swimming). The further east, the less crowded the beaches became, and the crowds were back at the Hel peninsula.

Almost all the time we were riding on cycle paths – either asphalted dedicated cycling roads, old minor roads, or forest paths in the protected zone of the forest by the sea. About two sections were more difficult because it was sand, but otherwise it was nice cycling.

In the end, Evka rode Rusty with Janko in front and they cooperated so well that even the sand sections were good. I rode on our Frog – folding bike. It was such a funny contrast – Evka on a loaded tandem with a trailer and three children, and her husband on a small folding bike next to her. Some days Kolko also went on his bicycle, Stanko rode around the campsites or a few shorter distances.

We were doing about 40 km a day, swam in the sea 1-2 times, slept in campsites, went to see the sand dunes, the museum of rocket research, ate fried fish, dug holes in the sand on the beach, and had a great time.

It was a nice vacation, simple without much planning, we could get there by car (even though I spent the last day traveling by train back to get the car), the weather was fine, the children were happy, we got along with the people – we definitely recommend Poland! :)

Below are Evka’s posts she wrote during the trip and here are some photos.
